Travonne Edwards

New community-based research by Travonne Edwards tackles the overrepresentation of Black families in the child welfare system

When Travonne Edwards was a child and youth care practitioner in the GTA, he saw firsthand how the child welfare system intervened more frequently and severely in Black families. He also witnessed the stark overrepresentation of Black youth in foster care and group homes. Determined to help change these inequities, he started on a path that led him to doctoral studies at FIFSW and a project investigating the over-reporting of Black families in the child welfare system.

Community engagement and collaboration are central to Edwards’ research. His current partners are the Black Community Action Network (BCAN) of Peel and the Youth Wellness Lab, a new hub for youth-led collaborative research led by assistant professors Stephanie Begun and Bryn King. Together, the collaborators have launched a study to analyze the reasons that Black families are reported to child welfare agencies, who is reporting them and how screening processes could be adjusted to reduce the over-reporting. Ran Hu advocates for decolonizing the stories we tell

Last summer, FIFSW PhD student Ran Hu presented a 10-minute talk on “Decolonizing the stories we tell about survivors of human trafficking” at the International Federation of Social Workers (IFSW) 2020 Conference. Her presentation drew from a study she conducted that examined how social service providers represent victims. Through her research, she found that their stories often reinforced “dominant victim stereotypes” while highlighting “the positive impact of their services on clients, rather than survivors’ efforts made in their journey of healing.”

Vivian Leung and Associate Professor Rupaleem Bhuyan examine how governments frame migrant resilience

Published in the British Journal of Social Work and highlighted in the Building Migrant Resilience in Cities (BMRC) research digest, Leung and Bhuyan’s study examined how migrant resilience is framed in Ontario and City of Toronto policies on immigrant integration and inclusion. After examining 14 documents related to resilience and migrants published between 2008 and 2018 by the Ontario Government and the City of Toronto, the researchers found that “Although government discourse acknowledges some of the structural inequities migrants face that require resilience (e.g. poverty, systemic racism, precarious employment), the discourse on migrant resilience notably omits government responsibility to enact structural solutions.”
