Summer start option

Students in the MSW Advanced Standing may choose to begin their program either in the Summer session (classes beginning April 21) or the Fall session (classes beginning September 9).

Program requirements and course loads remain the same whether you begin in the Summer or Fall. The maximum course load for the Summer session is 2 half-credit courses. Students who choose to begin their program in the Summer will have a Summer/Fall/Winter program registration, and graduate in the June 2026.

The Summer timetable provides full details of these courses. While the Registrar’s Office will provide a list of available courses that Advanced Standing students may choose from, space in courses fluctuates as students add and drop; the information on the course enrolment tab on ACORN always provides the most current data. Note that Summer courses are mostly elective courses; field-specific required courses are typically offered during the Fall and Winter sessions.

Should you wish to begin your studies this Summer, please email your request to registrar.fifsw@utoronto.ca immediately. The Registrar’s Office will provide a link to the summer start request form where you can indicate the course(s) you are interested in taking. The Registrar’s Office will write back to confirm your eligibility for Summer enrolment.

Important notes on fees:

Regardless of whether you begin your studies in the Summer or the Fall this year, the total fees and the requirement for 3 full sessions of registration remain the same.

However, Summer start students are assessed the full program fee immediately in the summer (your invoice will appear in mid-April), which is approximately $11,000. Half of this fee is due by May 2nd, 2025 in order to register, with the balance due on September 30, 2025 (depending on deferral status – please visit the Student Accounts website under the “Graduate Studies, School of – All Graduate Programs” for details).  Invoices with the confirmed fees for this upcoming academic year will be available in mid-April.
