Students: Interview Process and Tips
Before the Interview
- Review the practicum descriptions on the PAS, with particular attention to REQUIREMENTS.
- Through the PAS, each student will be matched with one practicum interview.
- Prepare information and questions for the interview: the purpose of the interview is to determine whether the practicum will provide the opportunity to develop social work competencies.
- Be prepared to provide a resume at or before the practicum interview.
During the Interview
- Use the interview to learn more about the setting and ask questions about the learning opportunities.
Following the Interview
- Communicate with the Practicum Office by email or phone if you have concerns about the practicum.
Field Instructors: Tips for Inclusive Interviews
Before the Interview
- Review your practicum description on the Practicum Administrative System (PAS). Students rely on the descriptions provided on the PAS by the field instructor in making their interview selections. Ensure your contact information on the PAS profile is complete and current.
- Contact the Practicum Office if there are any changes to your practicum description.
- When arranging interviews, be sure to include an accessibility statement such as; “accommodations are available upon request.” If a student requests an accommodation for the interview, please ensure that you consult with the student. The Practicum Office is available to consult and support in the process.
- If the interview is in person, share location details and availability of other accessible spaces such as gender inclusive washrooms, accessible parking, elevators.
- Consider sharing the interview questions with the student in advance.
- If meeting in person, consider creating a sensory-friendly environment, by using natural light when possible and minimizing loud or sudden noises (e.g. by turning off notifications on technology).
During the Interview
- Please remember: this is not an interview for the purpose of employment. Instead it is an informational interview to explore with the student how the practicum learning opportunities offers a foundation for social work learning, and to confirm that the student can meet all requirements.
- Consider sharing a copy of the interview questions with the student or post them in the chat if you are meeting virtually.
- Consider offering students the option of taking notes during the interview.
- Consider avoiding lengthy, multi-part questions.
Following the Interview
- The Practicum Office will assume the match is confirmed. You need not confirm. Contact the Practicum Office only if there are concerns.
- Contact the student and let them know anything they need for the first day of the practicum.
