Description of the practicum site and student activities:
Practicum Unit/Department: Intensive Care Unit
Learning opportunities include: Shadowing, observation of SW interactions, experiential learning. Attend daily interdisciplinary rounds. Direct services with patients and families. Assessment, treatment interventions, consultation. Trauma, substitute decision-making, end of life issues. Discharge planning. Attend patient/family care conferences. Provide community resources. Collaborate with community partners and liaison. Networking. Advocacy. Attend staff meetings. Crisis intervention. Psycho-educational, supportive, trauma-informed and solution focussed approaches in individual and family counselling. Project work relevant to ICU/Critical Care/hospital SW practice. Work setting is ICU and may include coverage for SW colleagues on other units. Comfortable working with patients and families in high stress life and death situations. Fast paced environment. Time sensitive working environment. Interdisciplinary team.
Please note: ICU is a Covid positive unit in a Covid positive hospital. PPE is worn as appropriate. ICU is a 28 bed unit and beds increase as needed. Death and dying are part of the ICU work and may be related to Covid, suicide, substances etc.
