Description of the practicum site and student activities:

Located at 985 Danforth Avenue, Recovery Reimagined offers a range of outpatient substance use recovery programs through Withdrawal Management Services. Open to all genders, programs include psychoeducational workshops, group therapy, and limited individual therapy. Rooted in compassion, courage, and self-determination, Recovery Reimagined works collaboratively within the spectrum of goal choices.

Student opportunities include co-facilitating open processing therapy groups, co-facilitating psychoeducational groups, engaging in individual therapy, developing content for groups, completing documentation, supporting with public outreach efforts, and assisting with client intake.

Requirements for this placement include:
– A strong interest in and/or experience working with people who use/used substances
– A strong interest in and/or experience facilitating groups
– Passion for engaging with social justice, trauma-informed practice, and anti-oppressive practice
– Comfort working with clients who are in crisis and/or under the influence of substances

– An understanding that there is a bidirectional relationship between substance use and trauma, and that substance use is a coping skill and survival mechanism
– Comfort working within a goal-inclusive recovery environment. Recovery Reimagined is fully supportive of clients who engage with the spectrum of goal choices (i.e., abstinence, moderation, harm reduction)

– Comfort building rapport and trust and engaging in direct and indirect practice with a client-led lens

– A commitment to self-reflexivity and humility when working with people who use drugs

– Ability to pivot between working in a small close-knit team and initiating self-led tasks and projects

Please note that this placement does not take place at the hospital and is located offsite at Withdrawal Management Services at Danforth and Donlands. There is opportunity to shadow and engage with the social worker within the Michael Garron Hospital Rapid Access Addiction Medicine (RAAM) Clinic. There is also opportunity to become involved in the residential program offered at Withdrawal Management Services.

No experience required. However, students in the practicum will be best equipped if entering the placement with group facilitation experience.

In-person.

Will this practicum involve direct work or a mix of direct and indirect?

Predominantly direct work. Some opportunities for indirect work through program development, documentation, and program evaluation.

    • Yes, with the exception of no automatic doors. There is an elevator, accessible bathroom, and wide door frames.
  • What are the physical demands of the practicum?
    • Moving back and forth between spaces on site, writing on the whiteboard.
  • Are there any other accessibility considerations that potential applicants with disabilities should be aware of?
    • Practicum is located at a Withdrawal Management Centre (Detox), which can be an overstimulating and busy environment
