Description of the practicum site and student activities:

Cedar Centre provides trauma-specific therapeutic services for individuals across the lifespan who have experienced interpersonal childhood trauma (sexual, emotional, physical abuse, neglect and witnessing violence).

Adult Program

Cedar Centre’s Adult Program provides clinical therapeutic services for individuals 19+ who have experienced interpersonal childhood trauma before the age of 18. Practicum students will have the opportunity to provide short term support to participants who are on the waitlist for individual therapy. Students also have the opportunity to participate in STAIR (Skills Training in Affect and Interpersonal Regulation) coaching with participants.

Student activities to develop social work competencies

Direct Service Delivery/Interventions/Working with Recipients of Service:

  • Conduct intake/needs assessments
  • Provide resource and referral information
  • Carry a caseload of individual clients
  • Develop, promote, plan and/or (co)facilitate educational groups or workshops
  • Develop and implement therapeutic interventions – assessment, implementation and evaluation of interventions
  • Counsel individuals in office or virtually
  • Apply best practices as outlined by the organization

Interprofessional collaboration:

  • Attend staff/administrative meetings
  • Attend in-service events
  • Consult and collaborate with professionals from other disciplines
  • Advocate for the client system
  • Participate, liaise and represent the agency at community meetings or plan of care meetings or task groups

Indirect Service Delivery:

  • Prepare and maintain case notes, reports, statistics which meet the organization’s accountability guidelines
  • Collect and/or analyze data
  • Contribute to research and other organizational initiatives

Other requirements:

  • Trauma-informed and experience working with adults. Student to have understanding of the Tri-Phasic Model. Student to feel comfortable offering counselling/therapy and intake/assessments through face to face and video/phone. Student to have flexibility being able to offer services in-person at the office.
  • Preference given to BIPOC-identifying or LGBTQ2S/gender-diverse or other marginalized students.
