Location:

Toronto South Detention Center -160 Horner Ave. Toronto.

FEIS Community program- both in community as well as CAMH Queen Street Location-Unit-A Main Floor.

Description of the practicum site and student activities:

The practicum is offered at medium remand center ( adult male only) .

The Forensic Early Intervention Service (FEIS) is a result of collaboration between the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services and the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care. Our team consists of members of the following professions: social work, occupational therapy, nursing, psychology, and psychiatry.

FEIS will provide ongoing assessment and support to individuals who:  Are/are at risk of being unfit to stand trial ,  May choose to pursue a not criminally responsible defense

For individuals who meet the FEIS inclusion criteria –we conduct psychiatric assessment and offer treatment recommendations, Visit and provide ongoing support while client is at the Corrections Facility. Support clients in their preparation for court appearances, Communicate with client’s lawyer & family, Provide client’s family with resources and support, Connect with client’s other community supports, Work with Corrections staff and partner agencies to facilitate discharge plans

Students will have an opportunity to do daily assessments on new admissions and ongoing follow-ups. Depending on their level of comfort, they could have a caseload. They will also be able to do community referrals for housing, OW/ODSP applications, and discharge planning.

Students will get the opportunity to shadow forensic psychiatrists and other social workers on the team.

Students will be able to observe and practice case management activities with clients released from custody and the practicum supervisor.

Students may have an opportunity to shadow/observe CAMH Patient units and mental health court/ addiction groups depending on students’ participation and motivation in the FEIS program at TSDC.

The student needs an Enhanced Vulnerable Sector check while working in a Detention Center. This check may require a longer waiting period, and the student has to apply at least 2 months in advance to avoid any last-minute application.
