Description of the practicum site and student activities:

The placement includes working with children, youth and families in the Division of Haematology/Oncology with a focus on children and youth diagnosed with a type of cancer, specifically a solid tumour. We are an extremely multi-cultural/multi-racial program. The families come from a wide variety of socio-economical backgrounds. As of result of cancer treatment many patients require intensive chemotherapy, surgery (limb sparing or sometimes amputation) and/or radiation treatments. Some patients and families face difficult decisions regarding end-of-life care. Students will work within busy inpatient and ambulatory inter-professional programs. Students with familiarity or comfort in working with this population is encouraged. The student may have additional opportunities to collaborate with within the psychosocial oncology group programs.
