To address the health challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic in Canada and around the globe, the Government of Canada, through the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, along with provincial partners, launched a second rapid research funding competition. The results were announced on June 25, and three projects led by FIFSW faculty received CHIR funding.

They include:

Principal Investigators: Carmen Logie and Robert Hakiza

•  An international multi-site, randomized controlled trial of a brief eHealth intervention to increase COVID-19 knowledge and protective behaviors, and reduce pandemic stress among diverse LGBT+ people
Principal Investigators: Peter A. Newman, Venkatesan Chakrapani, Nittaya Phanuphak

•. An increased risk of family violence during COVID-19 quarantine in Canada: strengthening social media-based collaborations between non-profit agencies to save lives
Principal Investigator: Jia Xue

CIHR’s investment will support 139 research teams from across the country that will focus on accelerating the development, testing, and implementation of measures to mitigate the rapid spread of COVID-19 and its negative consequences on people, communities, and health systems.

Assistant Professor Rachelle Ashcroft also recently received funding for COVID-19-related research. Her project “Recommendations for Patient-Centred Telemedicine: Learning from Patients’ Experiences with Synchronous Virtual Care During the COVID-19 Pandemic” received support from the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long Term Care (MOHLTC).
