Chicago Sun-Times columnist talks to Dean Dexter Voisin about the cost of city violence in Chicago

Professor Dexter Voisin’s new book America the Beautiful and Violent: Black Youth & Neighborhood Trauma in Chicago was recently highlighted in the Chicago Sun-Times. Columnist Neil Steinberg spoke to Voisin about his more than two decades of experience working with youth and others affected by violence Chicago to find out “what’s wrong and how it can be fixed.”
”This is really about resources,” said Voisin. “The structural driver of violence is really a resource issue. If you put white kids, Asian kids, any other group of individuals within these enclaves of need, you would have similar results.”

Voisin has served as Dean of the Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work since July 1, 2019, and holds the Sandra Rotman Chair in Social Work. Prior to his appointment at the University of Toronto, he was Professor at the School of Social Service Administration at the University of Chicago for two decades where he was a Faculty Affiliate at the Center for the Study of Race, Culture, and Politics and the Center for Health and the Social Sciences. He was also the Director of the STI/HIV Intervention Network (SHINE) and Co-Director of the Chicago Center for HIV Elimination (CCHE).
