About KMC:

Kababayan Community Service Centre, Inc. (Operating Name: Kababayan Multicultural Centre) is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping immigrants, including newcomers and other equity-deserving groups, in Toronto successfully integrate into Canadian society. We provide a wide range of settlement and employment services to guide individuals as they build their lives in Canada. We also offer targeted programs for equity-deserving communities, including youth, women, and seniors.

Description of the Scope of Work:

The MSW practicum a KMC offers a rich opportunity to engage in organizational development, and community practice within a Filipino-led settlement organization. KMC is seeking two MSW placements students who will work across multiple levels of practice, supporting KMC’s internal capacity, governance, and service delivery while developing advanced social work competencies. This placement will be a hybrid placement with a few in-person engagements related to the facilitation of wellness activities.

Key areas of responsibility may include:

  1. Mental Health and Wellness: Supporting the development and implementation of staff & client mental health and wellness programs and activities, including self & collective care strategies, and resource development, and workshop design and implementation.
  • Volunteer Program Development: Assisting with the formalization and implementation of KMC’s volunteer program, including outreach and recruitment, onboarding and orientation processes, role clarification, and coordination structures that support sustainability and volunteer well-being.
  • Policy and Governance Support: Contributing to organizational policy development, including the creation and rollout of KMC’s anti-racism policy; supporting updates to relevant by-laws; and assisting with strategic planning implementation in collaboration with the KMC’s Board of Directors.
  • Evaluation and Learning: Supporting the refinement and rollout of KMC’s organizational evaluation framework, including identifying indicators, developing tools, supporting data collection, and contributing to reflective learning processes that inform practice and decision-making.
  • Grant Writing and Resource Development: Supporting grant development and funding applications aligned with KMC’s mission and strategic priorities; assisting with funder research, needs articulation, and drafting sections of grant proposals (e.g., program rationale, community context, activities, outcomes, and evaluation plans; contributing to reporting and documentation for existing grants, where appropriate; developing an understanding of ethical, community-informed approaches to fundraising and resource development in nonprofit and settlement contexts
  • Service Delivery Support: Providing intake & case management support, responding to client inquiries, and co-leading peer support groups as needed, including supporting documentation & reporting, and follow-up, with attention to ethical practice, boundaries, and culturally responsive service delivery.


The scope of work will be tailored to the student’s learning objectives, practicum requirements, and evolving organizational needs, with an emphasis on meaningful participation rather than task-based placement.

Learning Goals:

Through this practicum, MSW students will have the opportunity to:

  • Develop advanced skills in community-based and organizational social work practice, including program development, policy work, and governance support.
  • Strengthen competencies in anti-racist, equity-informed, and culturally responsive practice, particularly within a Filipino community and settlement context.
  • Build capacity in organizational evaluation, including applying evaluation frameworks to real-world community settings.
  • Develop foundational skills in grant writing and resource development, including translating community needs into funder-aligned narratives while maintaining ethical and community-accountable practice
  • Apply critical reflection to understand the intersections of identity, power, systems, and practice in community and settlement work.
  • Gain experience working collaboratively within a mission-driven nonprofit organization, balancing service delivery, capacity building, and sustainability.

Practicum Requirements:

Does your practicum require any previous experience?

No previous professional experience is required. However, lived and/or professional experience working with newcomer, immigrant, or racialized communities, particularly within settlement or community-based contexts, would be considered a strong asset.

Is this practicum in-person, remote or hybrid?

Hybrid

Will this practicum involve direct work or a mix of direct and indirect?

Primarily indirect with some opportunities to lead/support direct engagements with clients (e.g. peer support groups, client follow-up, responding to client inquiries, etc…)

Field Instructor name and credentials:

The MSW practicum student will be jointly supervised by:

  • Rizza Solis, Executive Director, Kababayan Multicultural Centre
  • Dr. Ruth Wilson, BSW, MSW, PhD, Assistant Professor, School of Social Work, Kings University College

Supervision will include a combination of regular supervision & collaborative planning meetings, and reflective practice discussions that integrate organizational priorities with the student’s learning goals and professional development.
