Bio

Florence Wong (she/her) is a PhD candidate at the Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work, University of Toronto. Florence’s academic journey converges with her passion for social work practice and mental health advocacy. Her doctoral thesis research aims to explore the help-seeking of Chinese immigrant families with children facing mental health issues in Canada. Florence’s research interests include mental health, healthcare equity, child welfare, and social work practice and education. Her scholarly contributions encompass a wide range of publication types, including peer-reviewed journal articles, conference presentations, and audiovisual media. Florence is currently engaged in academic research with the “Young Parents Project,” “Use of Digital Technology in Children’s Mental Health,” “Science of Care – Shall We Talk,” and “Assessment of Selenium and Other Elements in Toenails in a Sample of CANCOV patients.” Before beginning her doctoral program, Florence worked as a registered social worker at the Child Rehabilitation Service for over eight years in Hong Kong. Currently, she has the opportunity to work as a mental health clinician at Mount Sinai Hospital’s Psychiatry Department, where her dedication shines through in offering culturally appropriate care to Chinese older adults with mental health issues and their caregivers. Beyond her clinical practice, Florence leverages her expertise in mental health, positive psychology, family therapies, and attachment-based play therapy (Theraplay) to foster social work practice and educational development. She has provided several training programs for healthcare professionals and families, as well as created multimedia resources and clinical practice manuals. Florence also devotes herself to community engagement to promote equity and cultural sensitivity in healthcare access, particularly through her work with the Yee Hong Centre to develop the Dementia Guidance Online Resource Hub for the Chinese community in Canada.
