WGN’s NewsNation interviews Dexter Voisin about the increasing violence in the US
Categories: Dexter VoisinDexter Voisin, dean of the Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work, spoke to NewsNation on the WGN America television network about his book America the Beautiful and Violent: Black Youth and Neighbourhood Trauma in Chicago.
The extended interview explored why gun violence is increasing across the United States and what can be done to solve this problem.
“If you have kids growing up in communities of deep need, where there are no jobs, they don’t see positive images of themselves,” Voisin told new anchor Joe Donlon. “If you teach someone to not see their lives as valuable, they’re not going to have respect for their lives or the lives of other people that look like them.”
“You cannot arrest poverty away,” he added. “It will take a long term commitment to reinvest in these communities.”
