University of Toronto Faculty of Music, Equity Diversity and Inclusion Office
Year 2 Practicum
September 2025- April 2026
Name of Practicum Site, Unit or Program:
University of Toronto Faculty of Music Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Office
Location:
Faculty of Music – 80 Queens Park and 90 Wellesley
Description of the practicum site and student activities:
With a commitment to artistic and academic achievement, and extensive curricula in fields such as classical and jazz performance, music education, composition, music history, music theory, and ethnomusicology, the Faculty of Music offers students courses that explore music’s intersections with health sciences, technology, and the humanities.
Established in 2023, the EDI Office is dedicated to fostering a supportive and inclusive environment within the Faculty of Music. Our mission is to enhance EDI, wellness, and safety through strategic policies, programs, and initiatives. Guided by insights from a Climate and Culture Review completed in 2022, we are committed to creating spaces where everyone feels they belong and can thrive.
Strategic priorities for the EDI Office include:
Education and Community Engagement
Enhancing awareness and education on EDI principles, tools, strategies to support and guide our communities through cultural shifts and systemic changes that advance EDI and reconciliation, and foster safety, wellness, belonging.
Systems Navigation
Working with those who need safety or EDI-related support to connect with resources that support community members to live, learn, and work in discrimination and harassment free-spaces. Responding to concerns with sensitivity in ways that demonstrate accountability and enhance access, belonging, and wellness.
Accessibility
Identifying and working to remove barriers to education, professional development, and opportunities to engage in meaningful scholarly and artistic work. Providing equitable opportunities to participate and thrive to all members of our communities, supporting each other to maximize our individual and collective creative potential.
The EDI Director is available for confidential consultations, advising, and resource navigation related to EDI, wellness, and safety. The EDI Office helps to ensure the faculty’s commitment to EDI is attended to with measurable outcomes, supporting its Principles and Guidelines.
The successful candidate will work closely with the faculty’s EDI Director on project and program development, outreach, delivery, and evaluation. This will include:
- Engaging in educational efforts within the faculty/U of T focused on helping community members understand the role of the EDI Office, consent and professional relationships in Music, how to navigate academic dialogue, accessibility, and the provision of academic accommodations.
- Supporting Future Sound 6 (FS6): a gender-affirming, inclusive program in partnership with the Scarborough YWCA Girls Centre funded by the Faculty of Music and the University of Toronto Access, Strategy and Partnerships Office. FS6 provides free music skills development to young BIPOC women, and BIPOC trans and gender-expansive youth in high school.
- Creating venue guides for our public performance spaces that clearly communicate accessibility features and the process for requesting accommodations.
We welcome a student who is interested in assisting the faculty to foster communities and cultures of inclusion and belonging: supporting the advancement of equity from dialogue to action within the University of Toronto. We also welcome students who identify as belonging to one or more equity-deserving groups.
