Stella’s Place
Stella’s Place, Clinical Program
Location:
54 Wolseley Street, Toronto, ON, M5T 1A5
Description of the practicum site and student activities:
Mission: Partnering with young adults, aged 16-29, and professionals to offer an innovative, collaborative model for mental health services.
Vision: Healthy, resilient young adults living the lives they choose.
Values: At Stella’s Place, we honour the contributions and capabilities of young adults and include their voices in our co-design and peer models.
- Inclusiveness, diversity, and equity
- Accessibility and knowledge sharing
- Creativity grounded in a strengths-based approach
- Participant co-design of all programs and services
Social Work practicum students are exposed to a wide range of learning opportunities, including:
- Direct Participant Support: Engage with young adults in individual and group settings, providing brief counselling, psychosocial support, and system navigation. This can be done through in-person interactions in our Cafe space, drop-in, and individual counselling programs.
- Exposure to Evidence-Based Modalities: Exposure to our practice of evidence-based approaches, such as Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT), attachment and neurobiology-informed approaches to the therapeutic relationship, and skills-based programs focused on building emotional regulation and coping strategies.
- Data Management and Case Documentation: Practice documentation skills, including data entry, case notes, and managing participant information securely and ethically.
- Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Work alongside Senior Clinicians, Mental Health Clinicians, Peer Support Workers, Art Therapists and Access Coordinators, gaining insights into multidisciplinary approaches and how various professional roles contribute to a participant-centered support system.
- Self-Reflection and Skill Development: Engage in ongoing self-reflective practices, assessing one’s own biases, values, and skills, and setting personal and professional development goals in response to real-world interactions with participants.
- Practicum Learners Cohort: Stella’s Place supports learners from universities across Ontario at the BSW and MSW levels. You will be learning alongside peers from other institutions and have the opportunity to engage and share with one another in group supervision.
This diverse hands-on experience at Stella’s Place can foster practical skills, enhance understanding of mental health services, and prepare students for future roles in clinical social work.
