Description of the practicum site and student activities:

We are seeking an outgoing, self-motivated and compassionate Social Work Practicum Student to support regional outreach, community engagement, and program delivery in Mississauga, ON.
This practicum offers a unique opportunity to gain experience in psychosocial oncology, community health promotion, volunteer engagement, and nonprofit operations within a national organization.
The student will play a key role in expanding awareness and access to our cancer support workshops by building relationships with healthcare providers, community organizations, and partners across their assigned region. They will also contribute to strengthening volunteer engagement, identifying service gaps, and enhancing equitable access to supportive cancer care.


Key Responsibilities
Regional Outreach & Partnership Development:
• Conduct outreach to hospitals, cancer centres, and community organizations via phone, email, and in person.
• Identify and document key contacts (e.g., social workers, nurses, patient navigators, program leads) and strengthen awareness of programs through targeted outreach and relationship building.
• Build and maintain a database of outreach and partnership opportunities, including underserved areas.
• Build and maintain meaningful, professional relationships with community stakeholders
• Coordinate and staff information booths at oncology clinics, hospitals, and community events.
• Engage directly with patients, caregivers, and healthcare professionals to share program information and sign up new participants.


Equity, Access & Community Insights:
• Identify barriers to accessing programs across diverse communities within the region.
• Explore and build connections with organizations serving equity-deserving and marginalized populations.
• Provide recommendations to improve the accessibility and inclusivity of programs.
• Contribute to a deeper understanding of regional needs, participation trends, and service gaps.
• Research and identify local funding or partnership opportunities to support increased reach and access


Volunteer Engagement & Program Support:
• Assist with local volunteer recruitment and onboarding
• Build relationships with local volunteers and provide support as needed
• Collaborate with other students and volunteers across the country to ensure coordinated outreach strategy
• Support virtual workshop delivery as a moderator or technical support (training provided)
• Participate in team meetings and contribute ideas to enhance outreach and engagement
• Gather feedback from partners, participants, and volunteers to inform program improvements

Supervision & Evaluation:
The student will receive regular clinical and professional supervision (weekly or biweekly) via Microsoft Teams from the Associate Director, Programs (MSW), who has over 20 years of experience supervising social work students. Ongoing mentorship and day-to-day support will also be provided by the Regional Manager and Senior Manager, Programs.
OBSERVATION / SHADOWING:
Student will have the opportunity to observe and learn from volunteers and our Regional manager
Supervisor is always available by phone

Practicum Requirements:

Other requirements:
Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, enthusiastic about initiating conversations via phone, email, and in-person, organized, detail-oriented, and self-motivated, warm, engaging, and able to interact respectfully with diverse populations, interest in psychosocial oncology, community development, and/or health equity, proficiency using Microsoft 365 and Zoom, ability to travel within the region; Bilingualism (French & English) is an asset. Regular team meetings via Microsoft Zoom. The student is welcome to join in-person if able. MS Teams for chat communication.

Does your practicum require any previous experience?


Previous experience with communications in a professional setting, both written and verbal. This could include presentations, customer service, or other roles where you’ve had to communicate clearly and professionally.
We’re hoping to find someone who is comfortable talking with new people, outgoing, and not afraid to start conversations. You should enjoy connecting with others, be curious, and feel confident representing the organization in a friendly and approachable way.
