Description of the practicum site and student activities:
JIAS Toronto is a not-for-profit corporation dedicated to helping immigrants with settlement in the Greater Toronto Area. JIAS Toronto assists immigrants and refugees in meeting basic financial, language, social, and other requirements of immigration. We work to advance the well-being and social integration of newcomers by providing a full range of settlement support, counseling, language training, and referral services.
A social work student placement will provide the opportunity to learn more about the settlement sector and the kinds of services provided to newcomers. A student will be able to provide settlement and integration services to immigrants and refugees, ensuring their successful adjustment in Canada as well as fostering connections to their new communities. A student in this placement will also have the opportunity to work with the Programs area at JIAS helping to plan and deliver group programs to clients (if interested).

Does your practicum require any previous experience?
Our ideal candidate has some familiarity with Canadian immigration rules and some understanding of the experiences of newcomers. Prior case management experience is also helpful.
Is this practicum in-person, remote or hybrid? If hybrid, please include details of typical hybrid work schedule.
Hybrid. Full time staff are required to come to one of our office locations 2 days per week. Practicum student can do 1 or 2 days.
Will this practicum involve direct work or a mix of direct and indirect?
Mostly direct work, some indirect such as helping to plan a client program.
