Description of the practicum site and student activities:

Student placements may be within Elementary, Secondary, Alternative Education, or Safe Schools assignments within the Halton Region. This placement will be located in a Halton High School, with services also provided to local feeder elementary schools.

Social Work services at the Halton District School Board may include:

  • Individual counseling – brief and goal directed counselling
  • Crisis intervention including suicide and risk assessments
  • Case management and community referrals
  • Group Work
  • Committee Work
  • Providing consultation on School Teams in elementary and secondary schools
  • Delivering/Co-Facilitating Professional Development to School Board staff
  • Attendance Counsellor services as mandated by the Ministry of Education, including initiating contact with caregivers and students regarding attendance concerns

This placement may also include opportunities to shadow other areas of Social Work practices within the Halton District School Board, including Safe Schools, Suspension and Expulsion program, and Newcomer/Welcome Centre Social Work services.
