Description of the practicum site and student activities:


Grace North Psychotherapy is a private psychotherapy practice providing mental health services to children, youth, adults, and families. MSW practicum students will have opportunities to gain hands-on clinical experience in a supportive, collaborative private practice environment.

Student activities may include providing individual therapy to children, youth, and adults; assisting with or facilitating therapeutic groups and workshops; participating in clinical consultation and supervision; developing treatment plans and clinical documentation; and engaging in ongoing clinical training and professional development opportunities.

Students will have exposure to a variety of presenting concerns and therapeutic approaches, with opportunities to further develop their assessment, intervention, case conceptualization, and therapeutic relationship skills.

  • What are the physical demands of the practicum?

This practicum involves primarily sedentary work, including sitting for extended periods while providing individual and group therapy, completing documentation, participating in supervision, and attending meetings or training. Students may be required to move between offices or therapy spaces, use stairs, and occasionally assist with setting up rooms for groups or workshops. Regular use of a computer and other standard office equipment is also required.

  • Are there any other accessibility considerations that potential applicants with disabilities should be aware of?  Our office has three floors so there is stairs.

Does your practicum require any previous experience?

Ideally experience with some counseling, psychotherapy and/or trainings beyond what Masters Program offers but not mandatory given it is a student placement

Is this practicum in-person, remote or hybrid? If hybrid, please include details of typical hybrid work schedule.

This is mostly an in-person position. However, if not seeing clients student can work from home.

Will this practicum involve direct work or a mix of direct and indirect?

Mix of both but be prepared to see clients

Student activities to develop social work competencies:

☒ Undertake discharge planning

☒  Provide resource and referral information

☒ Hold responsibility for a defined caseload/case management

☒ Develop, promote Interprofessional collaboration e, plan and/or (co)facilitate educational groups or workshops

☒ Develop and implement individual, family, or group interventions – assessment, implementation and evaluation of interventions

☒ Counsel (individuals, families, couples) – in office or in community

☒ Apply best practices as outlined by the organization

☒ Undertake instrumental activities that support the work with recipients (e.g., assistance forms, benefit forms, referrals, develop plans for activities of daily living)

☒ Provide drop-in services
