Location:

Description of the practicum site and student activities:
Acute Care Hospital – Georgian Bay General Hospital (GBGH)
This placement offers master’s level social work students the opportunity to develop core clinical skills in an acute care setting. Social work services are provided to the Emergency Department and all inpatient units (Intensive Care Unit, Obstetrics, Inpatient Medical/Surgical Unit, Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit), with a focus on supporting patients and families facing complex health and social situations. We are the local hospital for Central North Correctional Centre and as such we support a high population of individuals who are incarcerated or recently released.
Note: Social Work does not cover outpatient areas such as Diagnostic Imaging or the Dialysis Satellite Site. We are not a Schedule 1 hospital (no inpatient mental health beds/psychiatry on site). There are no pediatric beds on site — pediatric patients are seen in the ED only.
Common referral reasons include support for: substance use, mental health, palliative and end-of-life care, abuse/safety concerns, resource navigation (housing, income, access to healthcare), medical assistance in dying, caregiver support, unexpected bereavement, consent and capacity.
