Round Table Talk: A Public Health Approach to Violence Prevention

December 9, 2021 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

On December 9th Black Opportunity Fund will be hosting an important national roundtable on A Public Health Approach to Violence Prevention. The event will take place from 6pm EST to 8 pm EST.

Society’s response to violent crime has generally been predicated on a reactive criminal justice approach. The public health approach emphasizes prevention over reaction and the reduction of “risk factors” over the incapacitation of criminal offenders. The public health perspective recognizes that violence is the result of a complex causal system, and explores the social determinants of violence in the same way that socio-economic factors create disparate negative outcomes in healthcare for Black and racialized communities.

Oakland Chief of Violence Prevention Guillermo Cespedes who is a globally recognized leader in this area, has been confirmed to participate as the keynote speaker to frame the event.

It will be followed by a virtual Canada wide roundtable on a Public Health Approach to Violence Prevention, with expert presenters from across various regions of Canada bringing their own distinct perspectives, including FIFSW Associate Professor Tanya Sharpe.
