Building Inclusive Environments: Addressing Anti-South Asian Discrimination in University Environments

FIFSW’s Director, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Shahana Arain, pictured above, is the event’s Emcee.

Opening remarks will be provided by Nouman Ashram, Associate Professor, Teaching Stream, Organizational Behaviour & Human Resource Management, Rotman School of Management, University of Toronto.

Keynote speaker: Sunil Gurmukh, Assistant Professor, Faculty of Law, Assistant Dean, Diversity, Inclusion and Decolonization, Western University.

Event objectives:

  • Understand historical and current manifestations of anti-South Asian discrimination and its interconnections with other forms of discrimination (such as xenophobia).
  • Identify unique challenges in work and learning environments being experienced by diverse South Asian community members.
  • Share and discuss inclusive practices and resources faculty, staff, and students can proactively engage to strengthen inclusive and supportive environments for South Asian community members.

Format: Hybrid – This event will be hosted in person and livestreamed.
