The workshop will familiarize attendees with the advanced methods of motivational
interviewing. Focus will be placed on the component processes of MI that lead to producing
clinically meaningful change such as evoking and responding to change talk. The session will
involve demonstrations and experiential learning to facilitate MI skill building. Recent findings
on the clinical proficiency in MI will be discussed throughout the session.

 

Allen Zweben is currently Senior Associate Dean for Research and Academic Affairs and
Professor at the Columbia University School of Social Work in New York. Dr. Zweben has played
a key role in developing motivational interviewing (MI) techniques that have been employed in
both behavioral research and clinical practice for addiction problems. Dr. Zweben has had
extensive experience in training students, academics and professionals on how to incorporate
MI in social work practice. He has been a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of
Training (MINT) since its inception. Dr. Zweben is a co-author of a widely used textbook for
social work students and practitioners entitled “Treating addictions: A guide for professionals”.
A second edition of the book is now in process.
