Description of the practicum site and student activities:

Counselling and Behaviour is growing private psychotherapy clinic offering both in-person and online services. Our mission is to provide evidence-based psychotherapy that helps reduce symptoms of anxiety, depression, and emotional dysregulation. We specialize in adapting care for individuals with diverse and complex needs, including those with limited communication, cognitive or sensory challenges, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), learning disabilities (LD), and physical disabilities. Many of our clients come to us after facing barriers to effective care in their communities or following hospital-based treatment. Our approach is practical and skill-building, designed to help clients navigate real-life challenges with increased resilience and confidence. We are committed to offering a more accessible, personalized path to healing for every individual we serve.

Practicum Student Experience: As a practicum student at Counselling and Behaviour, you can expect to: Shadow a therapist during individual, family, and/or group psychotherapy sessions, with the opportunity to develop a small caseload under supervision. Assist with administrative responsibilities such as scheduling, billing, and conducting client intakes. Participate in the development of programs tailored to client needs. Gain hands-on experience in the day-to-day operations and growth of a private psychotherapy practice. To succeed in this role, strong writing and interpersonal skills are essential.

Familiarity with and understanding of Jewish cultural practices is beneficial, as many of the clients we serve are part of the Jewish community. Comfort learning and working with various software platforms, including FreshBooks, Google Docs, Gmail, Excel, JaneApp, Squarespace, and social media platforms. Excellent written communication skills. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to engage with clients, families, and team members in a professional and compassionate manner.

Are there any other accessibility considerations that potential applicants with disabilities should be aware of? Please note that there is a small hypoallergenic dog on-site who often participates in sessions as a therapeutic companion. Additionally, some clients may bring their own dogs to appointments. Individuals with dog allergies or discomfort around animals should take this into consideration.
