Location: 1 Civic Centre Court, Toronto, ON, Canada, M9C 2B3, Details: We are only at this location 1x/month. Otherwise in TDSB schools.

Our schools are in the central west and north central area of the city (the corridor north of Eglinton along Bathurst up to Finch). Our main office is at 1 Civic Centre Court in Etobicoke (only at this location once a month).

Usually in a different school for each of the 3 practicum days, and at the office (427 and Burnamthorpe) once a month.

Description of the practicum site and student activities:

The population served is elementary students (JK to Grade 8) 2 days of practicum/week and high school students (Gr. 9-12) 1 day of practicum/wk. We offer direct assessment and counselling to students; some parent support; some teacher support; do groups in the schools; we are a part of the crisis team in case of a serious situation at the school; we do staff presentations re. suicide protocol and mental health issues; we refer out to counselling centers or any other type of socio-emotional, practical support needed.

Student activities to develop social work competencies

Direct Service Delivery/Interventions/Working with Recipients of Service:

  • Conduct intake/needs assessments
  • Provide resource and referral information
  • Hold responsibility for a defined caseload/case management
  • Develop, promote, plan and/or (co)facilitate educational groups or workshops
  • Counsel (individuals, families, couples) – in office or in community
  • Apply best practices as outlined by the organization
  • Undertake instrumental activities that support the work with recipients (e.g., assistance forms, benefit forms, referrals, develop plans for activities of daily living)
  • Deliver crisis intervention

Interprofessional collaboration:

  • Attend staff/administrative meetings
  • Participate, liaise and represent the agency at community meetings or plan of care meetings or task groups
  • Collaborate on organization’s projects
  • Attend in-service events
  • Consult and collaborate with professionals from other disciplines
  • Advocate for the client system
  • Present cases at case conferences

Indirect Service Delivery:

  • Evaluate social work interventions
  • Prepare and maintain case notes, reports, statistics which meet the organization’s accountability guidelines
  • Collect and/or analyze data
  • Prepare draft policy/program/grant proposals
  • Contribute to research and other organizational initiatives
  • Develop skills in cross-cultural/spiritual competence
  • Develop, plan and implement prevention activities and programs

Practicum Requirements:

☒ Travel by public transportation between home visits, or satellite offices, or community meetings, etc.
