Description of the practicum site and student activities:

  • Establish and maintain professional and effective therapeutic relationships
  • Provide accessible, inclusive and responsive professional counselling services
  • Facilitate group and/ or workshops as required
  • Maintain clinical files in accordance with agency, professional practice, and accreditation standards
  • Conduct client screening, and risk assessments as appropriate
  • Develop and implement treatment plans in collaboration with clients
  • Engage in ongoing case conceptualization and clinical documentation
  • Collaborate with community resources to support client needs and improve access to services.
  • Advocate on behalf of clients in response to gaps in services
  • Participate in professional counselling clinical team meetings and agency staff meetings
  • Contribute positively to the functioning of the professional counselling team and agency
  • Participate in regular clinical supervision
  • Actively engage in supervision by bringing cases, questions, and reflections
  • Integrate feedback into clinical practice
  • Identify and respond appropriately to risk (e.g., suicidality, safety concerns, duty to report)
  • Follow agency protocols for crisis intervention and documentation

Does your practicum require any previous experience?
While this is a learning placement, practicum students are expected to enter with foundational counselling knowledge and skills. This includes prior academic preparation in clinical practice, familiarity with core therapeutic approaches, and readiness to engage in supervised client work.
