Description of the practicum site and student activities:

Child and Adolescent Urgent Response Services and Transitional Aged Youth program:

Trillium Health Partners’ Child and Adolescent Urgent Response Services (CAMHURS) is a three-month stabilization program for youth (up to age 18) who have been referred through presentation at Emergency Departments and Inpatient Services.   CAMHURS provides outpatient services for children and adolescents and their families, who are experiencing moderate to severe symptoms of mental illness. The services are for youth and their families who live in Mississauga and south Toronto at Credit Valley Hospital. Treatment may include individual and/or group therapy with a focus on Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT)/ Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) skills. Transitional Aged Youth program (TAY) – the TAY team includes psychiatry and social work. TAY focuses on providing stabilization and short-term treatment for emerging adults (age 16-24) to ensure a successful transition from child and adolescent services to adult mental health services. Services are offered to both patients and their families or caregivers. Treatment includes individual and group therapy with a focus on Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT)/ Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) skills.  Both programs services work among an interdisciplinary team.

As a clinician, the role includes but not limited to: clinical assessments, safety planning, individual and group therapy (DBT/CBT), caregiver workshops, community referrals and resourcing, internal and external case conferences and consultations, participate in interdisciplinary clinical and peer rounds, etc.

Does your practicum require any previous experience?

Yes.  Preference for those who have experience with the below:

  • Ability to interact with children, youth and their families in an empathetic manner
  • Understanding or awareness of mental health experience with children, adolescents and their families
  • Demonstrates flexibility and adapts to change

Number of practicums offered:

1 student to split their practicum period between both programs (CAMHURS and TAY). Student will be co-supervised by both supervisors.
