Description of the practicum site and student activities:

The Adult Outpatient Mental Health Clinic at Scarborough Health Network is a diverse interdisciplinary team consisting of social workers, psychotherapists, nurses and psychiatrists. As social workers, we provide evidence-based individual and group psychotherapy care to adults 18+ presenting with various mental health concerns. This practicum offers the opportunity to hone skills in both group and individual psychotherapy.

You will co-facilitate stage-1 trauma treatment groups for individuals living with Complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (CPTSD), also known as relational or attachment trauma. The group content focuses on safety and stabilization of trauma symptoms through mind, body, and relational healing interventions.

In addition, you will build an individual caseload and provide psychotherapy utilizing evidence-based modalities that are of interest to you. As supervisors, we practice and can support your development within the following modalities: CBT, DBT, ACT, EFT, IFS, attachment focused and applied polyvagal theory.

The qualities and skillset needed to excel in this practicum include previous experience providing psychotherapy/counselling, previous trainings, workshops or self-learning around therapeutic modalities/basic counselling skills, and qualities including being self-directed, taking initiative, and having a genuine passion and curiosity for psychotherapy and working with clients living with CPTSD.
