Lunch & Learn: Sheena’s Place

March 2, 2021 @ 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm

Sheena’s Place is a community-based mental health charity that provides free group support services for individuals living with eating disorders and difficult relationships with their bodies and food. It is estimated that 2.7 million people in Canada meet the diagnostic criteria for an eating disorder and many more experience symptoms, all of which can be detrimental to physical and mental well-being. Recent studies and community reports show a significant increase in individuals and families reaching out for eating disorder support as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Wait lists for hospital treatment programs are longer than they’ve ever been, meaning that many social workers are having to support their clients with these concerns, with little knowledge and experience in doing so. In this presentation, Kaitlyn will debunk common myths about eating disorders and explore how these complex challenges are linked to race, gender identity, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, and body size. Students will learn how to recognize symptoms of disordered eating in clients, how to support those affected, and where to refer folks for additional support.

Presenter: Kaitlyn Axelrod (she/her), MSW, RSW, Program & Outreach Coordinator at Sheena’s Place
