Description of the practicum site and student activities:

The practicum is based within the Toronto District School Board’s School Social Work Services, under the supervision of a registered school social worker. The placement spans multiple school sites across the TDSB LC1, including both elementary and secondary schools, serving a diverse student population from various cultural, linguistic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.

TDSB school social workers provide mental health and social-emotional support to students and families, helping to address barriers to learning, promote positive mental health, and strengthen home-school-community connections. Services are delivered in collaboration with school staff, families, and external agencies, with a focus on equity, trauma-informed care, and student-centered practice.

Student Will:

  • Observe and participating in student assessments and intake interviews
  • Supporting individual and group counselling sessions for students dealing with a range of challenges (e.g., anxiety, family conflict, grief, and school refusal)
  • Assist with case management, including communication with families, community agencies, and school staff.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings and consultations with teachers, guidance counselors, psychologists, and administrators
  • Contribute to the development of safety plans, behavioral support strategies, and referrals to community resources
  • Complete documentation such as case notes and progress reports in accordance with school board and ethical standards
  • Engage in reflective supervision and professional development activities to enhance clinical and cultural competencies
