Description of the practicum site and student activities:

Michael Garron Hospital is a division of Toronto East Health Network and a community teaching hospital serving nearing 400,000 people across 22 distinct neighbourhoods. Our hospital’s Purpose is to deliver exceptional and seamless care for our communities with valued partnerships and a spirit of innovation and discovery that inspires our people.

The Department of Patient Experience is a strategic, cross-organizational team that spans all clinical and non-clinical areas. Within this department is the Patient Engagement Team, which integrates patient and caregiver voices into the design, delivery and evaluation of services across the hospital.

The placement student will be embedded within the Patient Experience department, working under the supervision of the Manager of Patient Engagement. They will be involved in various projects, initiatives, and committees that advance patient- and family-centered care at the hospital. This includes: a) supporting the development of a new Patient Experience Strategy; b) helping advance the Patient Experience Partner program; and c) participating in the Patient Experience Panels. The student will learn and have an opportunity to practice engaging individuals/groups, designing and delivering presentations, conducting environmental scans, and participate in patient engagement meetings. They will also have the opportunity to receive mentorship from the supervisor regarding leadership development in the health and social services.

Does your practicum require any previous experience?

Previous experience with research activities, presentations, preparing reports and public-facing documents, and working in a professional health/social services environment is an asset.

This placement will benefit from an individual who takes initiative, is a team player, is able to build good working relationships, and is professional.
