TowelTalk is a mental health outreach program that places professionally trained counsellors in three of Toronto’s male bathhouses. This collaborative effort between several community organizations involved in HIV support and prevention is housed at the AIDS Committee of Toronto (ACT). Marco’s presentation will focus on the development and implementation of this innovative intervention designed to assist men in addressing the psychosocial issues that impact their sexual health. He will share some findings from their clinical work and discuss the experience of conducting anti-oppressive, client centered, sex positive therapeutic counselling from a harm reduction perspective in a highly sexualized environment.
There will be time for questions, as well as the opportunity to discuss how the counsellors have used their clinical understanding of the therapeutic process in this setting, and how it can facilitate disclosure of important material. This groundbreaking program is receiving international attention, and Marco has been invited to present on this topic at conferences in several countries.
Marco Posadas, MSW, RSW is a Bathhouse Counsellor and Program Coordinator at the AIDS Committee of Toronto and operates a private Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis practice. He is the Vice President-elect for North America of the International Psychoanalytical Studies Organization and serves on the Board of Directors of the OASW Central Ontario Branch. He is also a graduate of the Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work.
