NIA: Freeing ourselves from imposter syndrome, with Amma Gyamfowa

NIA is an empowering wellness workshop that offers a transformative opportunity to re-examine and overcome the complexities of imposter syndrome. Using the Africentric principle of NIA, this facilitated session combines psychoeducation on imposter syndrome, racial trauma, and culturally affirming strategies to enhance mental wellness and liberation for Black communities.

Grounded through culturally evidence-based practices, the series invites participants to engage in:

  • Interactive Dialogue: Engaging in open conversations that foster connection and shared experiences.
  • Mental Health Psychoeducation: Knowledge about the origins and effects of imposter syndrome and burnout.
  • Explorations of Racial Trauma and Anti-Black Racism: Understand Canadian experiences of racial trauma and its impact on identity and mental health.
  • Curated Exercises and Tools: Practical, evidence-based tools to challenge self-doubt and race-based anxiety grounded anti-Black racism.
  • Affirming Cultural Identity and Africentric Values: Exploring the significance of cultural pride and the power of Africentric perspectives in personal and collective healing.
  • Systemic Approaches to Representation and Psychological Safety: Discuss how allies can challenge the structural barriers that make educational and work environments psychologically safer.

Amma GyamfowaAbout Amma Gyamfowa

Amma Gyamfowa is a Ghanaian-Canadian mental health therapist, registered social worker, community researcher, writer and international speaker. Engaged in the field of social work for ten years, her expertise is rooted in supporting and counseling Black communities. Through designing educational community wellness workshops, she cultivates culturally affirming mental health supports through an Afrocentric approach with powerful culturally affirming analogies and resources. Founder and Lead Clinical Therapist of Womanist Healing and Co-Founder of Ghana’s Ohemaa Fest and The Healing Retreat, Amma is determined to create empowering holistic resources that strengthen Black communities’ abilities to heal, thrive and connect.
