Gerardo Betancourt
“Masculinities, migration and HIV: Analyzing the impact of sexual discourses on Latino immigrant gay men’s sexual desires, pleasures and passions in Canada.”
Gerardo Betancourt is a second year PhD student at the Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work. His research interest is related to the impact of masculinities discourses, migration, and the embodiment of sexual desires, particularly among Spanish-speaking gay men. He has worked for the past six years as a HIV Community Educator, leading an HIV prevention intervention called “Chicos Net” at the Centre for the Spanish-Speaking Peoples. In 2012, Queen’s University received CIHR funding for evaluating “Chicos Net”, Gerardo’s theoretical model in two cities in Ontario, and in Cali, Colombia.
Rusty Souleymanov
“An examination of resilience among substance-using men who have sex with men: Implications for harm reduction & HIV prevention programs.”
Rusty Souleymanov is a first year PhD student at the Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work. Prior to commencing his PhD, Rusty worked in the fields of harm reduction and HIV prevention. For his research, he hopes to use critical theory to re-examine resilience-enhancing, community-based approaches to HIV prevention and harm reduction for substance-using queer/gay/same-gender loving men. He will investigate how goals that are not directly focused upon disease prevention may help reduce the risk of HIV transmission among this group.
