February 3, 2014 @ 12:15 pm - 1:15 pm

Thelma Wheatley Presentation

Monday, Feb. 3, 2014
12:15-1:15pm
FIFSW, Student Lounge, Room 320

Complementary to the current Social Work Art Wall exhibit

(3rd floor, FIFSW), Breaking out of Huronia – February 3, 2014 to May 10, 2014.

Thelma Wheatley takes an interesting historic look at the ideals of early social workers and the vital role they played throughout the twentieth century in helping impoverished families in Toronto, and identifying defective children to be institutionalized during the eugenic era. As well she looks at the positive role played in de-institutionalization later in the century, addressing wrongs in the system, which culminated in the class action lawsuit against the government and Huronia Regional Centre in September 2013.

Ultimately she raises the issue: Can social workers ever independently challenge or influence current mores and government policy in society?

There will be a Q&A session following a short DVD screening.
