Description of the practicum site and student activities:
Our services are available to individuals with a variety of goals, including those who want to try to quit or cut down, or who would like to gain more awareness about their drinking or drug use. Our program is 2SLGBTQ+ affirming and we value and respect the unique needs and issues that lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and two-spirit (2SLGBTQ+) people face.
Rainbow Services is staffed by professionals who are trained and experienced in counselling people with concerns about their use of alcohol and other drugs. We understand the issues that are specific to the lives of 2SLGBTQ+ people that may affect their alcohol and drug use. Our services are respectful and tailored to meet the needs of our communities.
Types of Treatment and Services Offered
- Virtual and in-person group therapy
- Virtual and in-person individual support for making and meeting substance use related short-term goals
- Relapse prevention
- Psychiatric consultations (as needed)
- Concurrent disorder programs (for individuals with both mental health and substance use difficulties)
What students can learn
- Documentation standards; goal setting; discharge planning
- Group facilitation skills; individual counselling skills
- Participation in Early Recovery Group (ERG) focus on motivational interviewing and structured relapse prevention techniques, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy Group (DBT), Community Reinforcement Approach group (CRA), and Mental Health & Me group (CBT); client Goal Setting Sessions, team consultation meetings, social work bi-weekly meetings as needed
Practicum Requirements:

Does your practicum require any previous experience?
Some familiarity with group facilitation, knowledge of harm reduction principles, comfortable with sex positivity, knowledge of anti-oppressive and anti-racist frameworks; understanding of marginalized communities
