Ontario Ministry of Health – Indigenous Health Policy and Programs

Ontario Ministry of Health – Indigenous Health Policy and Programs

Location:

Toronto, ON at Dundas & University (remote within Ontario is possible)

Description of the practicum site and student activities:

The opportunity is within the Ontario Ministry of Health, working within a team that is focussed on Indigenous health policy and programs. The team works with First Nations, Inuit and Métis (FNIM) and urban Indigenous partners and other program areas across the ministry, other relevant Ontario ministries and Indigenous Services Canada to inform, develop and improve policies, programs and legislation that impact the delivery and effectiveness of health and mental health services for FNIM people in Ontario.

This is an indirect placement for MSW students interested in macro work – policy, program development and bringing Indigenous community voices to the policy development process. An ideal opportunity for a student who wants an understanding of the policy process and government decision-making, partner engagement/consultation. The student will be working as a part of a team that provides its best advice to government, based on evidence and what we hear and learn from communities, to improve health policies, programs legislation for Indigenous communities in Ontario.

Students will: plan, attend, participate and support at meetings with Indigenous partners and other ministry partners and take notes; review and analyze funding report-backs from provincial health funding for Indigenous health programs; prepare research and analysis to support policy briefs and presentations; review and undertake critical equity analysis of documents and provide input. Attend team meetings and participate/share perspectives.
