SWK4636H – Special Topics in Mental Health Social Work: Crisis Intervention in Social Work Practice - Elective

This advanced elective course provides students with the theoretical bases and practical skills for supporting high-risk clients in mental health crisis situations. A crisis is an acute disruption of psychological homeostasis in which one’s coping mechanisms are overwhelmed and there is evidence of distress and impairment. Most social workers will face crisis situations in their careers and this course will establish foundations for students to utilize empirically supported, trauma-informed, and anti-oppressive approaches that reduce risk and restore stability. Course content will focus on engagement, assessment, intervention, and referral process for marginalized clients in distress while covering common factors that contribute to crises. Students will learn through a variety of traditional and experiential methods, including lectures, guest speakers, group discussions, case studies, role-plays, presentations, practical assignments, and simulation-based activities. This course builds on foundational content from previous practice and mental health courses, as well as students’ existing knowledge and skills, to develop holistic competencies for safety planning and preventing harm. It is especially appropriate for students intending to work in hospitals, private practice, and crisis response teams.
