***IMPORTANT NOTE: Please be advised that this practicum is separate from the practicum with Student Counselling, Health and Wellbeing. Students completing their practicum with Osgoode Hall Law School will not exceed the minimum hours required by FIFSW. The only overlap between the two MSW practicum offers at York University is that all practicum students are required to attend the same mandatory Orientation Week between August 24-28, 2026.***

Description of the practicum site and student activities:

Populations Served: Law School Students, Adults aged 21+. Counselling provided in English only. Individual counselling. Diverse student body including: Black, racialized, Indigenous, mature students, international students, students with disabilities, first generation students Areas of Focus: Academic performance issues- high pressure, competitive culture; challenges navigating law school experience; mental health concerns: depression, anxiety, trauma, some moderate to severe mental illness; substance use issues; grief and loss; managing stress; trauma-informed practice; family life; discrimination/inequity; relationship/interpersonal issues; career and job prospect related concerns; adjustment and transitions; procrastination and motivation; isolation; imposter syndrome; self-care and wellness. Learning Opportunities: Counselling individual clients: conducting intakes and carrying ongoing client caseload within a brief service model Participation in planning and facilitation of Wellness related events and activities in the law school Participation in weekly peer group case consultation meetings with other counselling practicum students/ Interns in placements across York U Attendance at biweekly practicum student seminars on variety of counselling related topics delivered by various counsellors from across the university setting Primary Models of Care drawn from: Short-term, brief individual counselling Primary emphasis on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and CBT skills Additional modalities drawn from: Dialectical Behaviour Therapy Motivational Interviewing Crisis Intervention Acceptance and Commitment Therapy Trauma-informed care Mindfulness based interventions  Feminist, Crisis intervention Solution-focused

Does your practicum require any previous experience?

Previous clinical experience is required. There is a required orientation training week (in-person) for this practicum that is co-ordinated through York University’s central counselling office – Student Counselling, Health and Wellbeing. This will occur during the week before Labour Day.  Osgoode placement intern would need to attend a portion of the sessions offered in that orientation week (August 24th-28th, 2026) – pending the finalization of the schedule of sessions. These hours would be credited to the student’s total practicum hours.

The student will need to move between the Osgoode offices and the central counselling centre offices once a week for seminars and peer consultation.  This is approximately an 8-10 minute walk.
