Description of the practicum site and student activities:

This practicum will be focused on learning about a range of women’s reproductive health and mental health issues. The student will be supervised by a social worker working in the Reproductive Life Stages Program, a specialized mental health program at Women’s College Hospital. The program provides comprehensive assessment and treatment for pregnant and/or postpartum people and their partners who are experiencing mood and anxiety difficulties related to reproductive life stage issues. Modalities include individual, and group therapy.

Student activities to develop social work competencies

Direct Service Delivery/Interventions/Working with Recipients of Service:
Conduct intake/needs assessments
Provide resource and referral information
Develop, promote, plan and/or (co)facilitate educational groups or workshops
Develop and implement individual, family, or group interventions – assessment, implementation and evaluation of interventions
Counsel (individuals, families, couples) – in office
Deliver crisis intervention
Undertake discharge planning
Hold responsibility for a defined caseload/case management
Apply best practices as outlined by the organization
Indirect Service Delivery:
Evaluate social work interventions
Prepare and maintain case notes, reports, statistics which meet the organization’s accountability guidelines
Contribute to research and other organizational initiatives
Develop skills in cross-cultural/spiritual competence
Develop, plan and implement prevention activities and programs
Interprofessional collaboration:
Present cases at case conferences
Attend staff/administrative meetings
Collaborate on organization’s projects
Consult and collaborate with professionals from other disciplines
Advocate for the client system

This is an advanced level clinical social work placement with a focus on providing group and individual psychotherapy for a population experiencing complex mental health and psycho-social issues. Practicum applications are invited from students who have previous direct practice experience in the provision of psychotherapy or counselling, particularly to those experiencing mental illness.
