Women’s College Hospital – Peter Gilgan Centre for Women’s Cancers
Description of the practicum site and student activities:
The Peter Gilgan Centre for Women’s Cancers is a virtual program located at Women’s College Hospital (WCH), which supports patient-centered cancer care in partnership with Surgical and Gynecology Services, Medical Imaging, Specialized Medicine Services, the Genetics and Hereditary Breast Cancer Clinic and the After Cancer Treatment Transition (ACTT) Clinic. These clinics provide access to diagnosis for breast, endometrial, cervical and thyroid cancers, they perform preventative surgeries for breast and ovarian cancer and offer long-term aftercare, surveillance and support for cancer patients. The Centre draws together excellence in research, clinical care, innovation and education for women’s cancers.
The MSW student’s activities will include: (1) conducting psychosocial assessments and providing counselling and information to newly diagnosed breast cancer patients, patients undergoing breast surgery as part of their cancer treatment, patients who carry a genetic mutation undergoing preventive surgery, and patients being followed after cancer treatment; (2) participating in outreach or screening events for cancer prevention and awareness; (3) opportunity to engage in research/quality improvement initiatives; (4) engaging in patient education and supportive programs.
