Description of the practicum site and student activities:

The Health and Wellness Centre (HWC) at the University of Toronto Scarborough provides comprehensive physical and mental health services to support students’ well-being and academic success. The interdisciplinary team includes social workers, registered psychotherapists, physicians and registered nurses.

The MSW student will have opportunities to engage in the following activities under the supervision of field instructors:

-Engage in care coordination and resource navigation related to mental health and wellness

-Shadow One-at-a-time (OAAT) and brief counselling sessions

-Shadow crisis counselling and create a safety planning via an urgent mental health counselling session

-Participate in a psychosocial assessment

-Co-facilitate workshops and/or outreach initiatives related to mental health and wellness    

-Complete clinical documentation and charting in an electronic health record system

Practicum Requirements:

☒ N95 Respirator/Mask Fitting

☒ Influenza Vaccination (Flu shot)

The followings are assets/ nonessential:

-Experience supporting or being around individuals in mental distress.

-Understandings of social services available to students in the community

A resume and a brief cover letter describing the student’s relevant education and experience, learning goals, interest in mental health, and reasons for applying to the HWC as a practicum.

The practicum may involve working with students experiencing significant mental health challenges, including anxiety, depression, and crisis situations. As such, the role can at times be emotionally demanding. Regular supervision and team support are provided to help the student process emotional impacts and maintain well-being. The site encourages open communication about accommodation needs, workload, and self-care strategies to ensure a supportive and inclusive learning environment.
