Description of the practicum site and student activities:

The Center for Student Development and Counselling (CSDC) at Toronto Metropolitan University is a multi-disciplinary team of social workers, psychotherapists and psychologists who provide comprehensive individual and group therapy for a diverse population of university aged students. We work from a person-centered, anti-oppressive and trauma-informed lens, and emphasize the social determinants of health in our conceptualization of clinical practice. Interns are invited to explore the intersection of individual, community and systemic factors that contribute to mental health concerns.

The intern will be expected to provide individual therapy including single session, case management/resourcing, brief therapy, crisis response and ongoing psychotherapy. Our clientele displays a varying range of complexity (e.g. depression, anxiety, trauma, relationship concerns, family stressors, systemic oppression, and crises). The intern may also co-facilitate group therapy interventions depending on learning goals identified by intern and supervisor.

In addition, interns will meet for a didactic and experiential weekly training series over 8 months as part of this practicum. During this series, interns will learn and practice skills from various therapeutic modalities (e.g., brief therapy, Motivational Interviewing (MI), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy (AEDP), and Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT)).

Hybrid (access to a private space during work-from-home days is required). Working hours are 9am-5pm.

Accessibility Considerations:

Will the student have access to a private space for notes or computer use? Yes. On days that students are onsite, they will have access to a private office space within the counselling centre. Due to the hybrid nature of the role, students will be required to have their own computer and access to their own private space when working from home.

What are the physical demands of the practicum? General office work (sitting for large periods of time, long time on screens etc.). May occasionally require travel between buildings on campus within walking distance.

Interns will be documenting in the electronic medical record regularly and will conduct virtual appointments in addition to in person appointments, so long periods of screen time are expected.
