Toronto District School Board for and virtual for Hospital for Sick Children

Location:

Current school locations are East York, Leaside area, around Bayview and Eglinton. This may change, as school assignments can vary from year to year.

Description of the practicum site and student activities:

Interns would work as a school social worker. They would have the opportunity to carry a case load of students and families of their own with clinical supervision. They are asked to facilitate groups, and presentations for students, staff or parents. The role entails individual psychotherapeutic interventions with students, parenting support and school meetings and school consultation to staff. Students will be introduced to various models of intervention applicable to school social work such as CBT, trauma informed care, and attachment therapies.

In the past based on the intern’s interest there is also an opportunity to be a part of a multi-disciplinary team conducting trauma psychiatric consultation to children, youth and their families online through the hospital for Sick Children Tele- mental health program. Interns will have the opportunity to enhance their assessment skills and clinical consultation skills. A high proportion of the consultation through this program are for rural and remote communities and serves a large proportion of Indigenous and Metis Peoples.
