What is the purpose of the study?

This study aims to gather information about disordered eating behaviors, muscle-building behaviors, and body image, as well as the social health of adolescents and young adults ages 16-30 years old in Canada. The goal of this study is to develop research-informed recommendations for health care, public health, and policymaking professionals to protect the health and well-being of Canadian young people.

Roughly 1,000-3,000 adolescents and young adults across Canada will be invited to participate. You are invited as a potential participant because you are between the ages of 16-30 years old and live in Canada.

What will happen if I take part?

If you decide to participate, you will be asked to provide informed consent.

You will be asked to complete the online survey. Questions in the online survey focus on your engagement in disordered eating behaviors and muscle-building behaviors, body image, as well as your mental, physical, and social health. You will also be asked to provide demographic information. It is estimated to take between 30-60 minutes to complete the survey. You may complete the survey on your own time, at your own pace.

At the end of the survey, you will be asked if you would like to participate in a follow-up survey 6- and 12-months after the completion of your initial survey. If you agree, you will be asked to provide your email address. These repeat surveys allow us to discover how your experience changes over time.

Will I be compensated for participating?

Two (2) Apple iPads and twenty (20) $25 Starbucks gift cards will be raffled off to participants. At the end of the survey, you will be asked to OPT IN to the raffle by providing your email. You will only be contacted if your name is selected in the raffle drawing.

How is the information collected being used?

Information collected will be aggregated and analyzed. The findings from the study will be disseminated through articles in academic journals, professional information sheets, webinars, conference presentations, and infographics. You will never be personally identifiable in any research article, presentation, or public materials.
