Rupaleem Bhuyan

The Centre for Critical Qualitative Health Research (CQ) welcomed Professor Rupaleem Bhuyan as its new Director, starting January 1. Bhuyan was also named the inaugural Eakin-Hoffman Chair in Critical Qualitative Health Research, a position made possible through the generous support of Joan Eakin and Chris Hoffman, with matching funds from the Dalla Lana School of Public Health.

Learn more about Bhuyan’s research and her appointment on CQ’s website.

CQ is a teaching and research unit at the University of Toronto that supports critical qualitative health researchers within U of T and its affiliated research institutes, as well as researchers in other settings in Canada and beyond.

“The term ‘critical’ refers to the capacity to inquire ‘against the grain’: to question the conceptual and theoretical bases of knowledge and method, to ask questions that go beyond prevailing assumptions and understandings, and to acknowledge the role of power and social position in health-related phenomena,” explains the CQ website. “The notion includes self-critique, a critical posture vis a vis qualitative inquiry itself.”

Bhuyan’s research examines immigration, gender-based violence, systemic racism, and social policy, using feminist, decolonial, and community-engaged methods. She has been an Academic Fellow at CQ since 2018.

On January 20th, Bhuyan will be among the featured presenters at the SAWIS (South Asian Women’s and Immigrants’ Services Inc.) 2026 Summit “Building our Community Response to Address Exclusions.” She will be co‑presenting with FIFSW PhD student Rushdia Ahmed and MSW alumna Swarna Tyagi on their project, “Empowering Racialized Migrant Women through Holistic Community‑Based Settlement Services: Collective Organizing for Sustainable and Equitable Economic Inclusion.” Their research is funded by an SDGs@UofT Catalyst and Synthesis Research Grant, as well as a GATE Research Grant from the Institute for Gender and the Economy.
