Description of the practicum site and student activities:

F4 is an active inpatient ward providing integrated clinical, research and education services for adults with surgical needs and/or digestive disease disorders, as well as off-service patients. The unit is comprised of diverse services including surgical, medical, and palliative care. The goals of services to our patients are cure, control or palliate. Patients are often admitted for management of complex issues such as surgical emergencies and symptom control.

As a member of the interdisciplinary team, the unit social worker provides services to adult inpatients with digestive, gynecological, urological and other oncological diagnoses (the majority of whom undergo surgery). Students will have the opportunity to shadow and practice skills including psychosocial assessment and treatment, crisis intervention, advocacy, family engagement, supportive counselling, discharge planning, palliative care, patient/ family/ staff education, and linking with community resources.

Does your practicum require any previous experience?

Previous experience is not necessary, however students may benefit from having experience with end of life/ palliative care, housing/ homelessness, oncology, and/ or crisis intervention.

In-person.

Will this practicum involve direct work or a mix of direct and indirect?

Primarily direct work. Some potential for limited indirect work if student interest is indicated.

  • What are the physical demands of the practicum? Sitting and standing for prolonged periods of time, frequent use of computer. At times, having to move between different units of the hospital for meetings, supplies, etc, though this is fairly infrequent.
