SUMMARY:Practice Consultation for Black-Identifying Social Work Students
DESCRIPTION:This event is open to FIFSW students only.  \n \nJoined by Shawnette Thompson\, the purpose of the practice consultation sessions is to provide Black-identifying social work students with an opportunity to receive advice\, mentorship\, and general support from a Black clinical social worker around how to navigate issues that may arise in their own practice while on practicum and professionally. This space has been created as a braver space for Black-identifying students to share and explore their experiences. \nShawnette Thompson (she/her) brings to the role of Social Work Practice Consultant for the Black Social Work Student’s Association over 15 years of rich experience in social work. This experience spans across private practice\, community programs\, mental health clinics\, universities\, group homes\, and adolescent treatment facilities. Her extensive career has included roles as a child and youth worker\, an individual and family therapist\, a manager of community programs\, and most recently\, the Supervisor of Clinical Affairs at U of T’s Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work’s Talk It Out Clinic. Shawnette also continues to actively maintain a private practice\, providing therapy to couples\, individuals\, and families\, in addition to providing clinical consultation to social workers in the field. \nAs a Black cisgender female of Caribbean descent\, Shawnette is deeply invested in the mentorship of future social work professionals\, with a focus on dismantling Anti-Black racism and fostering culturally responsive practices. Her appointment as the Social Work Practice Consultant for the Black Social Work Students’ Association at FIFSW is a testament to her dedication and collaborative spirit. \nIn this role\, Shawnette is committed to creating a nurturing environment that not only respects the shared identities of Black students but also promotes the personal and professional\, development of each individual. \nRegister for the Practice Consultation for Black-Identifying Social Work Students!

He has been instrumental in advancing the University’s AODA commitments through the application of an intersectional lens and a community-based approach. \n  \n  \n  \nReshma is a trauma-informed social worker and educator whose work focuses on enhancing individual\, communal\, and institutional EDI as well as creating and implementing harm reduction and violence prevention strategies. Prior to joining the Faculty of Music\, she worked for six years at Accessibility Services on St. George campus. There\, she supported thousands of students as an Accessibility Advisor\, managed a large team of Accessibility Advisors\, and chaired the office’s first EDI Committee. In 2021\, her work was recognized when she received the Jill Matus Excellence in Student Services award. She is actively involved in governance\, serving on the University Affairs Board for two years\, the board of the Urban Alliance on Race Relations since 2014\, and the Leonard Foundation since 2020.

DESCRIPTION:FIFSW’s Talk It Out Clinic is co-sponsoring the event “Grace for Ourselves\, Space for Others: A Day of Conversation About Black Masculinity and Mental Health.” \nGrace for Ourselves\, Space for Others is a three-part\, day-long event being held at Verity Centre for Better Living (449 Vaughan Road). The event is focused on understanding Black men\, mental health and the ways of making space in the work being done in Toronto. The March 10 day-long event is a collaboration between Black Daddies Club and its Sunday Dinner Series\, Talk It Out Counselling Clinic\, Black Men’s Therapy Fund\, and Within Eden\, combining inspirational keynote\, panel discussion\, and a meal and dialogue session. \nPlease note that the Sunday Dinner portion of the event is for Black identified men exclusively. All Black men (straight\, gay\, cis\, trans) are welcome. SUMMARY:Professional Skills Development Series: Lorie Shekter-Wolfson- "Now that I have my MSW\, now what?"- Room 548
DESCRIPTION:*Workshop open to all FIFSW MSW students* \n\nLorie Shekter-Wolfson is an experienced clinician\, administrator and consultant. A graduate from the University of Toronto Masters of Social Work program and several Executive programs at the Rotman School of Management\, she has worked in a variety of settings and roles\, including health care\, education\, government and community. Her invaluable first-hand experience as a leader and change agent has been very helpful for those institutions and businesses undergoing change. In addition\, her expertise in interprofessional and team-based care has led to several award winning initiatives. Lorie has held a variety of positions including President and CEO of JVS Toronto\, Dean and AVP Waterfront Campus\, George Brown College and Director of Social Work\, The Toronto Hospital (now UHN). As President of JVS\, Lorie led the organization through a time of tremendous change\, including addressing its financial challenges\, a new strategic framework\, new Mission\, Vision and Values\, and implementing a more efficient governance model. \n\nAs Dean and AVP Waterfront Campus at George Brown College\, Lorie was a member of the senior management team. Lorie co-led the development\, design and implementation of George Brown College’s new $175M Waterfront Campus that opened in Fall 2012. The Campus houses the Centre for Health Sciences and is designed to embrace an Interprofessional learning framework. Lorie has also authored articles on social work\, marital and family therapy\, interprofessional education and its impact on design\, as well as two books on eating disorders. Lorie is the recipient of the Colleges Ontario 2010 Exemplary Service Award and the Ontario Association of Social Workers’ 2011 Inspirational Leader Award. Over the years\, Lorie has been an active member on several agency and government committees\, education and professional committees and boards both locally and across Canada; as well as community boards and has been the recipient of several United Way Spirit Awards. Lorie is currently a member of the Dean’s Advisory Committee at the Faculty of Social Work\, University of Toronto and sits on the Board of BAYCREST Hospital and Apotex and is the Committee Chair of Quality and Safety.

DESCRIPTION:This event is for FIFSW students only. \nRegister for Transforming Health Systems: Advancing Health Equity with Black Communities\nAbout our featured speaker\n \nKevin Haynes is the Senior Manager\, Black Health Strategy for the Provincial System Support Program (PSSP) at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health. He is responsible for leading the provincial expansion of the Substance Abuse Program for African Canadian and Caribbean Youth (SAPACCY)\, the first-ever Canadian hospital and community partnership focused on advancing care for Black youth. Kevin’s role also includes supporting the advancement of health equity for Black communities via PSSP’s role in supporting Ontario Health’s Mental Health and Addictions Centre of Excellence’s Provincial Clinical Programs portfolio\, as well as supporting the advancement of Ontario’s Black Health Plan. Kevin is also the Co-Chair of the Mental Health and Addictions Advisory Panel (MHAAP) with the Toronto Police Services Board. In this capacity\, he provides leadership to the panel\, which has a mandate to review\, provide advice and make recommendations to the Board related to monitoring and evaluating the implementation of Toronto Police Service’s Mental Health and Addictions Strategy\, and other matters related to policy involving mental health and addictions issues. \nAbout The Health Equity Grand Rounds\nThe Health Equity Grand Rounds focuses on equity issues related to health and mental health practice. DESCRIPTION:This event is for current FIFSW students only.  \n \nJoined by Shawnette Thompson\, the purpose of the practice consultation sessions is to provide Black-identifying social work students with an opportunity to receive advice\, mentorship\, and general support from a Black clinical social worker around how to navigate issues that may arise in their own practice while on practicum and professionally. This space has been created as a braver space for Black-identifying students to share and explore their experiences. \nShawnette Thompson (she/her) brings to the role of Social Work Practice Consultant for the Black Social Work Student’s Association over 15 years of rich experience in social work. This experience spans across private practice\, community programs\, mental health clinics\, universities\, group homes\, and adolescent treatment facilities. Her extensive career has included roles as a child and youth worker\, an individual and family therapist\, a manager of community programs\, and most recently\, the Supervisor of Clinical Affairs at U of T’s Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work’s Talk It Out Clinic. Shawnette also continues to actively maintain a private practice\, providing therapy to couples\, individuals\, and families\, in addition to providing clinical consultation to social workers in the field. \nAs a Black cisgender female of Caribbean descent\, Shawnette is deeply invested in the mentorship of future social work professionals\, with a focus on dismantling Anti-Black racism and fostering culturally responsive practices. DESCRIPTION:Embark on a transformative journey of social change with FIFSW’s Social Justice & Diversity Field of Study’s event: “Synergy for Social Justice: Linking Policy and Practice.” This forum\, set for Monday\, March 25th\, from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm (EST)\, offers a unique opportunity for students\, faculty\, staff\, and community members to delve into and strengthen the connections between social work\, policy advocacy\, and real-world applications. Through a blend of presentations\, interactive discussions\, and engaging activities\, we will collaboratively explore policies and practices impacting communities and individuals\, fostering personal growth and learning. \n\nWe value your unique perspectives and experiences. Please bring your questions and insights to the table. Engage in conversations about the pressing social issues\, spanning from inclusivity and justice to sovereignty and security. Together\, we will collaborate to foster a deeper understanding of social justice’s function in policy and practice and work towards actionable change in the following topics: \n\nAnti-Carceral Approaches to Gender Violence\nHousing Insecurity\nInclusivity through Disability and Social Justice\nIndigenous Rights and Self-Sovereignty in Canada\nMarked by Colour: Law Enforcements Hunting Targets\nNavigating the Intersections of Educational Barriers\nPolicing Policies for Children and Youth\n\nLight refreshments will be provided for all attendees. \nAll-gender washroom facilities are conveniently located on the 7th Floor\, right by our event space. \nRegister in advance for Synergy for Social Justice. \n\n\n\n
