SUMMARY:Lunch and Learn: Surrey Place on developmental disability services in Toronto and beyond
DESCRIPTION:Exploring Strengths\, Challenges\, and Future Directions for Service Through and Interdisciplinary and Social Work Lens\n  \nThis presentation will explore common challenges and issues experienced by people with Developmental Disabilities and their families\, such as high rates of mental illness\, lack of access to appropriate mental health and general health care\, service gaps in the adult sector\, vulnerability to abuse\, and others. \nWe will facilitate a discussion regarding the various services offered at Surrey Place and across Ontario to meet the needs of individuals with Developmental Disabilities and their families across the lifespan\, through an interdisciplinary lens. We will look at the current state of systems collaboration between community agencies and service sectors in Toronto\, as well as explore the need for including more content around Developmental Disabilities in Social Work education. \nWe will offer a snapshot of the Ontario Autism Program and Toronto Autism Services\, exploring the strengths of the program\, as well as challenges and issues encountered on the front lines of service. We will explore the current state of services for individuals with Developmental Disabilities in Toronto and beyond and facilitate an important discussion around future directions of these services. \n  \nMichael Lander\, MSW\, RSW\, is part of the Intake and Parent Training team with Toronto Autism Services at Surrey Place. Michael also works as part of a private practice\, FLEX Psychology\, providing counselling services to young adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder and their families. \nMichael’s work in the field of Developmental Disability Services encompasses many areas\, including job/career development\, behavioral intervention\, depression/anxiety treatment\, social skill development\, transition planning\, and advocacy\, as well as program development\, professional education\, and running family support groups.

DESCRIPTION:Please join the Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work Alumni Association for an engaging evening workshop/webinar. \nPrivate practice\, like any small business carries its risks\, rewards and challenges. From stepping into the arena\, to developing and managing your practice\, the social worker requires particular skills\, structures and strategies for success. This is an open discussion workshop where you can address your needs and issues with regard to building your successful practice. \n  \nThis workshop will be available both in-person and online. In-person attendance will be limited to 30 alumni. Kindly register by Friday\, November 5th at 12 noon. \n  \n**Registration required** \n  \nFor further details and registration: https://swkprivatepractice.eventbrite.ca \n  \nPlease note that this session will be streamed and recorded for posting on the FIFSW website. \nRefreshments will be provided. \n  \nWorkshop leader: \nGary Direnfeld\, MSW\, RSW \nWith more than 35 years of practice experience\, Gary has not only developed his own thriving practice\, but now consults to other mental health professionals\, mediators and family law lawyers on the development of their successful practice throughout Canada and the US.   In addition to his practice\, Gary is also a recognized media personality from his former show on the Slice Channel (Newlywed\, Nearly Dead) to his parenting\, family life and relationship column in the Hamilton Spectator (600 columns)\, to his other radio and TV appearances as a social work expert (more than 400 media interviews in Canada). As a result of his practice\, Gary is also a court recognised expert in marital and family therapy\, custody and access recommendations\, child development\, parenting plans and even an expert of assessing the work of other assessors. He too is an alumnus of the U of T\, School of Social Work\, having graduated in 1985.
