SUMMARY:FIFSW Research Office Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Grandchild-Grandparent Relationship and the Adolescent Wellbeing in Light of Other Dynamics in the Family\n  \nPresenter: Shalhevet Attar-Schwartz (MSW\, PhD)\, Hebrew University of Jerusalem. \nWednesday\, November 25\, 2015\n12:00pm-1:30pm\nRoom 548\, Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work\n246 Bloor Street West\, Toronto  ON \n  \nPlease RSVP to Joanne: joanne.daciuk@utoronto.ca or 416-978-5720 \n  \nWarm and emotionally close relationships with parents and grandparents have been found in previous studies to be linked with better adolescent adjustment. This talk will mainly discuss the findings of a study\, based on a sample of 1\,400 Israeli adolescents (ages 12-18)\, analyzing the contributions of the dynamics of these intergenerational relationships to adolescent well-being. Such an examination\, informed by Family Systems Theory and Intergenerational Solidarity Theory\, can expand our understanding of the mechanism that shape child outcomes. \nDr. Shalhevet Attar-Schwartz\, Senior Lecturer\, School of Social Work and Social Welfare at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. \nDr. Attar-Schwartz is a Visiting Professor at the Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work at the University of Toronto. Her research focuses\, in general\, on the well-being of children and youth. She is particularly interested in intergenerational relationships in the family and its contribution to young people’s adjustment and well-being. Her research work examines the familial and social conditions under which informal involvement of grandparents is more beneficial for their grandchildren. She has examined those issues in the Israeli context\, among Arab and Jewish adolescents and in the international level with researchers from the UK. Such a cross-cultural examination is essential in order to better understand the interplay between culture and intergenerational relationships. Dr. Attar-Schwartz also specializes in the well-being of children at-risk in public care.
